NEW YORK - The defending champ has won again at the international hot-dog eating contest at New York's Coney Island.

Takeru Kobayashi of Japan downed 44.5 hot dogs and buns in 12 minutes, good enough to win, but still six dogs short of his own record last year.

It was the 88th annual Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest. The winner takes home the "Coveted International Mustard Yellow Belt" and a year's supply of hot dogs.

Last year, Kobayashi consumed a record 50 1/2 hot dogs and buns in 12 minutes to win.

At one point during today's competition, Kobayashi jumped up and down, hoping to get all the food to settle before he continued.

At the end of the event, he lifted his shirt to show spectators his swollen stomach.

44.5 dogs in 12 mins !! how is that possible ! and this guy is a skinny guy too.

It is always the skinny dudes that do this kind of thing they are freaks of nature. I think that William "the refridgerator" Perry was in this contest too. I guess he didnt do anything note worthy

This guy has 2 world records in hot dog eating and weighs only 113 pounds...WOW

It was jusxt a big publicity stunt to juice the contests ratings................I mean how many times in the past ahve you seen the highlights of the hot dog eating contest on ESPN

I've seen this competition before. The guy breaks the hotdogs in half, wolfs them down in like 3 bites, and then dips the buns in water to moisten them up. It's an unbelievable site.

The show I was watching also had a couple of balloons. One was empty and it was representing his stomach before the competition. Then they jammed 45 or so mashed up hotdogs and buns into the other one to compare. It was sickening to see what this guys stomach actually looked like and how big it really was.
