ESPN has announced the Green Bay Packers have signed former distance running prodigy Alan Webb to a free agent contract as a kick returner. Webb's signing comes on the heals of the signing of NFL Europe standout Jorg Heckenbach, who caught 65 passes for 759 yards and five touchdowns in seven seasons. Heckenbach is also a highly rated longsnapper, a position Webb is also interested in playing.
Webb, just 20-years old, broke Jim Ryun's longstanding high school mile record two years ago, running 3:53. He has struggled since his record setting performance, however, and always had a career in football in the back of his mind. In 1991, as a fourth grader playing flag football, he once returned a kick off for a touchdown.
Terms of the deal were not released.
